Best friends with (and partner of) Kit Rodriguez. Elder sister of Dairine Callahan. Pseudo-sister of Carmela Rodriguez
JUST SO YOU KNOW. Nita is a wizard. Not a wand-waving, potion-brewing wizard, but one who speaks the Speech. Her brand of wizardry (and the only brand, in her canon) is linguistic-based. It also isn't something you talk about. So, Nita's "powers" are, at the moment, only known to her immediate family, her partner (Kit), and Kit's family, as well as other wizards that she knows-- such as her Seniors back home, Tom and Carl.
THE OATH.In Life's name, and for Life's sake, I say that I will use the Art for nothing but the service of that Life. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so -- till Universe's end. HISTORY.Nita Callahan was your average thirteen year old girl-- and I do mean average. She wasn't especially popular, or athletic, or even talented. Her strengths lay in her strong sense of self, her intelligence, and her love of knowledge. In fact, when the other kids teased her about being a know-it-all or a geek, Nita ran to her refuge: the library. And it was in the library that Nita happened upon a book that would soon change her life. It was a worn out little book, with library binding and an ordinary Dewey Decimal number, but the title caught her attention. So You Want To Be A Wizard?, it had said. At first, Nita had thought it was a joke, and she'd checked it out with a semi-straight face, taking it home. She didn't read it right away, but when she did, she devoured it. It made so much sense, and a part of her wished it could be real, and what did she possibly have to lose? It was this book that opened the door to wizardy for Nita, providing her with her Oath and leading her (eventually) to her partner, Kit. They suffered their Ordeal together, the wizarding test of dedication and strength of heart that all fledgling wizards have to endure, venturing to a parallel universe known as the Other Manhattan, where they came face to face with the Lone Power. That One was, like all the Powers That Be, was of great strength-- what we would call gods-- but had somehow changed from promoting life to promoting death. His cause was entropy, the slow destruction of all that exists, and as it turned out, wizardry existed to battle that. Nita and Kit faced down the Lone Power in that universe, and after making it out alive, were forever bound as partners.
Since their Ordeals, Nita and Kit have faced off against the Lone Power himself in his various forms, and have done their best to uphold their Oaths. They have aided human, animal, and inanimate objects alike, venturing not only to other planets (the Moon is a favorite thinking place) but to other universes, and have proven time and time again that their hearts are pure-- for wizardry will not live in the unwilling heart. Nita was the first to share with her parents, a process that was both terrifying and necessary, and her younger sister Dairine also proved to be a competent wizard as well. Kit told his as well, though not without complications, and together they proved an even more potent force. But, of course, teenage boys and girls can never spend too much time together without arousing suspicions-- it was because of this that Nita was sent to Ireland the next summer, in order to get some "time off" from her wizardry. But wizardry takes no vacations, and Nita was soon tossed into another battle, one in which she was on unsteady ground. It was in Ireland that she met Ronan, a wizard who was also the Host of one of the Powers themselves, the One's Champion, and where she battled against the Lone Power in the oldest way.
Back in the States, Nita and Kit had a bit of a rough patch, where communication was strained and tensions grew. This was only inflamed by the fact that Nita's mother had fallen ill, a malignant brain tumor claiming her life. Dairine, as a young wizard, was unable to help, and Nita threw herself headfirst into learning how to battle the cancer. Of course, it's discouraged for wizards to intervene selfishly, and though Nita had persuaded herself that helping her mom get better wasn't selfish, the Powers knew better. Her mother died, the cancer taking over her body, and Nita was paralyzed with grief. It took her quite a while to even want to think about wizardry, but she was helped by Kit and her father's care and the comfort she found in her younger sister.
Now, Nita and Kit are about to start their senior year of high school, living in a flat loaned to them by the higher ups in the chain of command in order to be more centrally located to the Crossings-- the intergalactic train station for wizardly folk. They'll be attending St Judes and Constance in the fall, on scholarship, and though Nita is vaguely worried about leaving her father alone to work his flower shop, she has her faith in the Powers that Be that everything will turn out for the best.
